The capital city Muscat, has modern buildings existing side by side with the remnants of another era. The Ali Mosque, the New Mosque and the Sultan's Palace in Muscat are worth visiting.
Two well-preserved 16th-century Portuguese forts, Al Jalali and Mirani, dominate the skyline of the old walled town. The walled town has delightful old houses; narrow streets and three beautifully carved original gates.
Visit the large souk (market) at Sohar with its tailors, fruit-sellers and fishermen and feel the local pulse of the Middle East. You may end up buying souvenirs at a bargain! Take time out to visit the imposing four-storeyed fort in the town with six towers overlooking the bay.
Take a trip to Nizwa for its immense palm oasis that stretches for 13km, its ancient fort and of course its gold and silver handicrafts.
Jebel Akhdar is called 'The Green Mountain' and lives up to its name. Visitors frequent it for its picturesque terraced villages. On the northern slopes of the Jebel Akhdar is the Al Hazm Fort, built in 1708, and the oasis town of Rostaq.
